Twelve lakhs is the most talked-about CTC in India right now, because it sits next to the new regime’s headline number: no tax up to ₹12 lakh. The result for FY 2026-27: a monthly in-hand of ₹94,277 with zero income tax, using this page’s defaults — new regime, Karnataka, metro, basic at 40%, PF on the ₹15,000 ceiling.
But “12 LPA” and “₹12 lakh tax-free” are two different twelves, and the gap between them is where all the interesting arithmetic lives.
Two different twelve lakhs
The §87A rebate zeroes tax when taxable income is at most ₹12,00,000. Taxable income is gross salary minus the ₹75,000 standard deduction — so the true tax-free line is a gross salary of ₹12,75,000.
A ₹12,00,000 CTC doesn’t even produce ₹12,00,000 of salary. Employer PF (₹21,600) and the gratuity provision (₹23,077) are inside the CTC but are not pay; gross cash salary is ₹11,55,323. Taxable income lands at ₹10,80,323 — nearly ₹1.2 lakh below the rebate limit. The slabs would charge ₹48,032 on it; §87A cancels every rupee.
Translated back into recruiter language: with this structure, any CTC up to about ₹13,22,000 is fully tax-free. A 12 LPA earner can absorb a 10% hike before TDS exists.
The marginal-relief zone: ₹12.75L to ₹13.45L gross
What happens just past the line is the part almost every explainer gets wrong. Without a safeguard, gross pay of ₹12,75,001 would trigger the full slab computation and a five-figure tax bill would appear over one rupee of income. The marginal-relief proviso prevents this: inside the zone, tax is capped at (taxable income − ₹12,00,000).
Concrete pair, from this calculator’s engine: a ₹13,50,000 CTC pays ₹28,536 of tax and takes home ₹1,04,159 a month; a ₹14,00,000 CTC — just past the relief zone — pays ₹74,331 and takes home ₹1,04,429. Fifty thousand rupees of extra CTC, ₹270 of extra monthly pay. The relief guarantees a hike never reduces take-home, but immediately above the zero-tax edge, most of an increment goes to catching the tax up to its slab value.
At a ₹13,00,000 gross salary the proviso caps tax at ₹26,000 — where the official Basic Calculator, which skips the proviso, shows ₹66,300. The FAQ below covers why this site follows the Act’s version.
Regime notes at 12 LPA
Under the old regime this CTC computes ₹1,07,208 bare, and no combination of standard deductions rescues it: §80C capped at ₹1,50,000 plus an HRA exemption saturated at the full ₹2,40,000 of HRA received still leaves ₹57,288. Against a flat ₹0, the calculation resolves the same way at every realistic deduction level. The regime question genuinely reopens two or three hikes from now — the old-vs-new comparison tool linked below shows both computations side by side whenever that day comes.
₹94,277 in Bengaluru
Bengaluru absorbs this salary comfortably but not lavishly. A 2BHK in Indiranagar or Koramangala runs ₹35,000–₹50,000 — over a third of take-home — while HSR, Whitefield, or Sarjapur Road trims that to ₹25,000–₹35,000. Auto-plus-Metro commuting adds a few thousand; the city’s restaurant and delivery prices are the highest outside Mumbai. Karnataka’s professional tax is the ₹200-a-month flavour, ₹2,400 a year, already reflected in the numbers above. The common Bengaluru budget at this level: rent 30%, savings 30%, everything else 40%.
