Ten lakhs is the first CTC that sounds like ₹1 lakh a month — and the payslip promptly disagrees. For FY 2026-27 the real number is about ₹77,931 a month with the defaults used on this page (new regime, Karnataka, metro, 40% basic, PF on the statutory ceiling). The good news hiding inside that number: income tax’s share of the gap is exactly ₹0.

How a ₹10,00,000 CTC splits five ways

  1. Basic salary — ₹4,00,000. The anchor; everything else is computed from it.
  2. HRA — ₹2,00,000. Half of basic in a metro.
  3. Special allowance — ₹3,59,169. The balancing figure.
  4. Employer PF — ₹21,600. Inside the CTC, outside your bank account.
  5. Gratuity provision — ₹19,231. Reserved by the employer, payable only after five years.

The first three add up to a gross cash salary of ₹9,59,169. From that, three deductions: income tax (₹0 — see below), employee PF (₹21,600), and professional tax (₹2,400). Annual in-hand: ₹9,35,169.

The ₹28,417 that never gets charged

Taxable income here is ₹8,84,169 after the ₹75,000 standard deduction. Running the new-regime slabs over it yields ₹28,417 — and then the §87A rebate, which applies in full to any taxable income up to ₹12,00,000, wipes the slate. This is worth understanding rather than just enjoying: the rebate is a cliff-edge benefit tied to the ₹12,00,000 line, not a permanent property of your salary. At 10 LPA you enjoy a comfortable ₹3.16 lakh of taxable-income cushion below that line.

Old regime at 10 LPA: a floor of ₹24,808

Feed this CTC to the old regime with everything maxed — ₹1,50,000 of §80C and enough rent that the HRA exemption saturates at the full ₹2,00,000 of HRA received — and the computation still returns ₹24,808, because the old slabs start charging 20% from ₹5,00,000. Since the new regime computes ₹0 here without a single declaration, the calculation favours it at every deduction level a 10 LPA earner can realistically reach. (Run your own combination in the old-vs-new comparison tool; the outcome is stated neutrally there too.)

What changes above 10 LPA

The interesting boundary sits about 32% away. Keep this structure and tax remains zero until roughly ₹13,22,000 of CTC, where gross salary touches ₹12,75,000 and taxable income hits the rebate limit. Between ₹10 and ₹13.22 lakh, every rupee of hike flows to in-hand minus only PF increments. Just past the line, the marginal-relief proviso takes over so the first tax rupees stay proportionate — the cliff many people fear at “₹12 lakh” does not exist on the way up.

₹77,931 in Hyderabad

Hyderabad may be the strongest cost-of-living match for this salary among the big tech cities. Gachibowli and Kondapur 2BHKs rent around ₹20,000–₹30,000, meals and commutes price well below Bengaluru, and Telangana’s professional tax at this income is ₹2,400 a year (₹200 a month above a ₹20,000 monthly threshold) — identical in total to Karnataka’s. The practical effect: a 10 LPA offer in Hyderabad frequently leaves more discretionary money than a 12 LPA offer in Mumbai after rent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the monthly in-hand salary for a 10 LPA package?
About ₹77,931 under the new regime for FY 2026-27, taking the standard structure of 40% basic, metro HRA, PF on the ₹15,000 ceiling, and Karnataka professional tax. The annual in-hand is ₹9,35,169 against the ₹10,00,000 CTC — the ₹64,831 difference is PF (both sides), gratuity provision, and professional tax, with income tax contributing nothing at all.
How much income tax applies to a 10 LPA salary in FY 2026-27?
Zero under the new regime. Gross cash salary works out to ₹9,59,169; subtracting the ₹75,000 standard deduction leaves ₹8,84,169 taxable. Slab rates alone would charge ₹28,417, but taxable income below ₹12,00,000 qualifies for the full §87A rebate, which erases the entire amount before it is ever deducted.
Would the old regime compute lower tax for me at 10 LPA?
Not at this salary structure, whatever is declared. Even with §80C maxed at ₹1,50,000 and rent high enough to exhaust the HRA exemption (which caps at the ₹2,00,000 of HRA actually received), the old regime bottoms out at ₹24,808 — while the new regime sits at ₹0 with no declarations. The comparison only becomes a genuine contest at higher incomes with unusually large deductions.
At what salary does a 10 LPA earner start paying tax after a hike?
Around a ₹13,22,000 CTC with this structure — that is where gross salary crosses ₹12,75,000 and taxable income breaches the ₹12,00,000 rebate limit. A 10 LPA earner has roughly 32% of hike headroom before TDS becomes non-zero, and even then marginal relief keeps the first slice of tax tiny.
Why do two friends with the same 10 LPA offer see different credits?
Structure and state. A company that sets basic at 50% instead of 40% moves more money through PF and gratuity, trimming the monthly credit; PF computed on full basic instead of the ₹15,000 ceiling trims it further; and professional tax varies from ₹0 (Delhi, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan) to ₹2,500 a year (Maharashtra). Same CTC, different payslips.
